The car pulled along the curb on Embarcadero. My kids had been tracking the white Jaguar on the app, following its progress and counting down the minutes to its arrival.

We had already successfully ventured via driverless car from our hotel to the Exploratorium. After a couple hours in a fantastic children’s museum where art and science converged and delighted, the drive home promised to be a continuation of the experience.

Then the Waymo panicked. Lacking the patience to negotiate a pedestrian-heavy sidewalk and continue through a slightly less traditional egress, the robot showed its human side. It got nervous. It had second thoughts. Perhaps it even questioned decisions that led to this moment. After all, the Orion spacecraft was only a week away from its journey around the moon, and this hunk of metal was chauffeuring tourists around San Francisco.

It ditched us. A message immediately flashed on my phone: Ride canceled. I only wish it had said: “It’s not you, it’s me.”
